This tool asks about you: your profession, household, income band, and what matters most in a place to live. We take that seriously. All of that data stays on your device. We don't collect it, we don't store it on our servers, and we don't share it with anyone.
When you use the Scenario Explorer, you may enter personal details such as your profession, income range, household composition, citizenships, and lifestyle preferences. Whatever you enter is saved in your browser and, where the scoring uses it, applied in your browser. None of it is transmitted to us, and no part of the ranking is computed on our servers.
Everything is saved to your browser's local storage , a private storage area built into your browser that keeps data on your device between visits. This is what lets you come back and pick up where you left off without creating an account.
Local storage is different from cookies. Cookies get sent to servers with every request; local storage does not. Your data stays put. All scoring and analysis happens right in your browser using client-side JavaScript. Our servers provide public country reference data (visa requirements, economic indicators, safety ratings, etc.) but never receive, process, or store anything you enter about yourself.
Here is the complete list of what we store on your device and why. There is nothing else:
None of this ever leaves your device.
When you share your scenario results, the link contains your priority weights and deal-breaker preferences: things like “safety is important to me” or “I prefer warm climates.” That includes any deal-breaker you set, such as a minimum LGBTQ equality rating or a requirement for international schools, so share it only with people you would tell those things to. It also carries the country you are moving from and your employment type (employed, self-employed, remote, retired, and so on), because the scoring needs both. It does not include your profession, income range, household details, children's ages, citizenships, languages, or home city.
The address bar carries that same stripped link. When you run the Explorer, the URL is rewritten to the shareable form, not to your full profile, so copying it out of the address bar, or finding it later in your browser history, exposes preferences and nothing personal. Your full profile stays in local storage, which is not part of any link.
Anyone with the link can see your preference settings and re-run the analysis, but they cannot identify you from it.
We do not set any cookies. We do not use Google Analytics, tracking pixels, or any third-party analytics services. We do not fingerprint your browser. We have no way to identify individual visitors or track you across sessions.
The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages, and its public country data comes from a Cloudflare Worker we run. Neither receives your personal scenario data: the only request the site makes for data is a plain read of the public country dataset, identical for every visitor.
Some assets are loaded from other providers, which means those providers see your IP address and which page requested the asset, as any embedded asset does. They receive nothing you entered. They are: flagcdn.com (country flag images), unpkg.com (the Leaflet map stylesheet) and server.arcgisonline.com (Esri's map tiles). Every map on the site is drawn by Leaflet in your browser from Esri's tiles; nothing is embedded from a third-party map site.
We may display links to third-party services (insurance, money transfer, language learning, etc.) that are relevant to expats. These are affiliate links that include a referral identifier for our site; they do not include any of your personal data. If you click an affiliate link, the destination site's own privacy policy applies.
The “favorite” feature stores only country codes (e.g., “FR” for France). No personal information is associated with favorites. They are saved in your browser and nowhere else: starring a country sends no request to us, and your stars are not visible to anyone else.
Since your data lives in your browser, you have full control. Use the “Clear My Data” button on your scenario results, or clear your browser's local storage at any time. There is nothing on our servers to delete.
“Clear My Data” removes every item in the list above: profile, results, favorites, saved comparisons, and display preferences. It clears this browser on this device only, since that is the only place any of it exists.
If we ever introduce user accounts, we will implement encryption-at-rest so that only you can access your data. We will never sell personal data. We will update this policy before making any changes to how data is handled, and we will notify users of material changes.
